SANS Awards LarsonAllen’s McCann With Coveted Lethal Forensicator Honor
MINNEAPOLIS—October 31, 2011—Senior Technical Analyst Brandon McCann accepted the Lethal Forensicator award on August 27, 2011, at the conclusion of his SANS training to become a certified forensic analyst. (SANS is the world’s largest provider of
information security training and
security certification.) As part of his training, he was given a complex forensics challenge. His successful solution to the puzzle prompted the recognition. Recently, McCann also passed the forensic analyst certification exam.
“This training was an excellent opportunity to add depth to our skills, and the certification demonstrates superior forensic knowledge,” says Randy Romes, an information security principal with LarsonAllen. “This credential is important to our clients.”
For McCann’s challenge, he was given a computer and told a terminated colleague had possibly stolen company documents. He was charged with proving conclusively that documents were stolen (or not). McCann discovered deleted files and manually recovered them. He also found evidence that information was removed and stored using a thumb drive. The final test included a simulated court case in which he was asked to testify about his findings.
“It was intense,” says McCann. “The trainer obviously had a lot of legal experience, so I had to answer his questions very precisely.”
As our information systems continue to become more sophisticated, certification as a forensic analyst has become highly valued in the business and information security communities.
