Nearly every day there is a news headline about an information security breach at a major company. Subsequently there is a huge demand for experts who can perform security assessment and compliance services for these entities.

Unfortunately there is a huge shortfall in the number of cyber security professionals.

“Some reports talk of 30,000 to 50,000 individuals that are going to be needed that aren’t in the pipeline right now,” according to Randy Romes, an information security principal with LarsonAllen in a recent podcast.

Romes was interviewed by a representative from the U.S. Cyber Challenge (USCC)—an organization dedicated to identifying, recruiting, and placing the next generation of web and technology security professionals.

The USCC, LarsonAllen, and other businesses are promoting these careers by staging week-long cyber competitions to give students hands-on experience, and boost their interest in information security jobs.

Listen to the 12-minute interview to get background on the shortage of professionals, and tips about entering the field, including:

  • Essential preparatory experiences
  • The importance of internships and industry associations
