Turn-by-Turn Health Care Reform Guide: A White Paper Series for Providers

Health care in America is on the verge of unprecedented change, regardless of what ultimately becomes of the federal reform laws. Providers across the continuum of care can all expect significant impact on their operations and payment models over the next decade, but there is uncertainty about what that impact will be.
From conversations thus far, all indications suggest that the road to reform (legislated or otherwise) leads to value. There are, however, several ways to arrive at value, so the journey for each provider will be a little different. To help your organization navigate the way, we’ve developed a white paper series, entitled Health Care Reform GPS: A Provider Roadmap, that clarifies topics of the broader, national discussion and gives turn-by-turn directions to your value destination.
These publications will cover four major health care reform milestones for providers:
Payment reform concepts and terms you need to know
Organizational assessment guide to identify your starting point and destination
Performance improvement and necessary steps to arrive at your destination
Patient-centered care requirements and how to meet them
In the end, this collection of papers should give your organization a better grasp on the overarching reform conversations and a solid understanding of what you need to do to move forward on your own travels to value.
The Map Legend: Four Fundamental Reform Concepts
This initial document gives context to the series’ subsequent papers by examining the very language of health care reform itself. Regard it as an essential primer on four of the most current terms and concepts in health care reform (mostly related to payment reform) and what they will mean for all provider types. You’ll learn about:
- Value-based payment
- Accountable care organizations (ACOs)
- Bundled payments
- Bending the cost curve

Coming soon: the remaining three papers in the series will be added here as they are developed.
